Frequently Asked Questions
What is granite, marble, and quartz?
Granite is formed within the deep layer of the earth and is composed of various minerals (including quartz).
Marble is a metamorphic stone (meaning that is is formed from another rock through a long period of time) created from limestone .
Quartz is a mineral that is crushed and is then mixed with pigment and resin (quartz is engineered instead of found).
What is the difference between the three?
Granite, marble and quartz are very similar in terms of durability, stain resistant, scratch and crack resistant.
The main difference is that quartz is non-porous opposed to granite and marble which is porous (though marble is more porous). Granite and marble will require sealing to prevent any spills or dirts from going into the granite.
Granite and marble can withstand heat whereas quartz cannot due to the resin (may cause discolouration or burn marks).
In terms of appearance, granite shows more grains/specks which caries in colours. Marble has a more consistent colour with veins that accentuate the colour of the marble itself. Quartz is man-made so the colours can be customized through the pigment that can also mimic the pattern of veining or speckles.
Is it necessary to seal natural stone?
It is not necessary to seal stone but Niagara Granite automatically seals the natural stone at the shop. Granite is not as porous as marble but sealing can avoid issues like absorption of liquids and stains which can cause minor discolouration.
Though, granite and marble can easily be cleaned with soap and water. For more strength occasionally use vinegar diluted in water.
Quartz should be cleaned using simply water and soap as chemicals can cause damages to the resin.
